Germany Investigates Russian Links to Weapons Cache Discovered in Berlin Woods

German intelligence agencies suspect that a weapons cache found in woods near Berlin last year was intended for Russian assassination plots.

The interior minister, Alexander Dobrindt, confirmed that federal prosecutors are investigating a suspect abroad for espionage and alleged preparations for violent acts.

While refusing to explicitly confirm Russian involvement, Dobrindt acknowledged the possibility of foreign influence and emphasized the heightened threat level facing the country.

Since the discovery, security officials found two handguns and ammunition, which authorities believe were meant for targeted attacks. Reports in major German outlets suggest these weapons could have facilitated killings on behalf of Moscow.

Officials state the cache was rendered inoperable and monitored for months, but no approaching parties were identified. The investigation follows previous allegations of Russian plots against German officials and the defense industry.

Earlier this year, a CNN report alleged Russia planned to assassinate the head of German arms company Rheinmetall, sparking widespread condemnation and debate.

In 2021, a Russian national was jailed for life in Germany for a murder allegedly ordered by Moscow; later freed in a prisoner swap.
