Explosion at Bolivian Military Barracks Kills Two, Injures 81

A violent explosion on Friday at a military barracks in Viacha, 30 km from La Paz, killed at least two people and left 81 injured, Defense Minister Ernesto Justiniano confirmed. The blast occurred around 18:30 GMT when pyrotechnic material detonated in the compound that houses an artillery regiment.

Health officials estimated between 10 and 15 fatalities, though authorities fear the death toll could rise. Police noted that dozens of nearby homes suffered damage, and emergency workers are still searching rubble for the missing seven reported by officials. A risk of a second explosion was raised, prompting authorities to urge civilians to keep a safe distance of at least 150 m from the base.

President Rodrigo Paz offered his deepest solidarity to the families of those affected and pledged a thorough, technical, and transparent investigation. He posted on social media that the investigation would examine the causes and circumstances of the incident.

Police spokesman Roger Roca stated that fireworks had been stored at the barracks and the exact cause of the blast remains under investigation. Local authorities in Viacha have declared three days of mourning in response to the tragedy.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about storage practices and safety protocols at military installations across the country.
