Downing Street has said the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands rests with the UK, following a report indicating the US could review its position on the British claim to the territory.
The internal Pentagon email, first reported by Reuters, suggested measures the US could pursue in response to perceived lack of support from allies regarding its campaign in Iran. A No 10 spokesman emphasized: The Falkland Islands have overwhelmingly voted in favour of remaining a UK overseas territory, and we’ve always supported the islanders' right to self-determination and the fact that sovereignty rests with the UK.\
The Prime Minister's official representative highlighted that the UK government has consistently asserted its stance to successive US administrations, stating, nothing is going to change that.
The Pentagon's email, which has not been publicly verified by BBC News, implies that the review of the Falkland Islands was one of several suggestions, including the potential suspension of Spain from NATO over its opposition to the U.S. war efforts. A NATO official clarified that the founding treaty does not contain provisions for suspension of membership.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reacted, asserting, We do not work based on emails. We work with official documents and positions taken by the U.S. government.
The Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory situated in the south-west Atlantic Ocean, remain embroiled in a sovereignty dispute with Argentina, which also claims the islands as the Malvinas. The tensions escalated during the 1982 conflict initiated by Argentina's military government, leading to British military intervention and the eventual recapture of the islands.
As this situation develops, Downing Street reaffirms its commitment to the Falkland Islanders and their expressed wishes regarding their political status.
