Roberto Mancini Reinstated as Italy Coach amid Pirlo Betting Controversy

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has appointed former player‑coach Roberto Mancini as national team manager for a second stint, a decision made a day after Andrea Pirlo withdrew his candidacy following a controversy involving a Russian betting company.

Mancini, who led Italy to an Euro 2020 triumph, was re‑chosen a day after technical director Paolo Maldini resigned and Gennaro Gattuso stepped down after Italy failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. FIGC president Giovanni Malago stated that Mancini’s proven experience and international profile made him the most suitable choice to steer the Azzurri.

The decision also followed the resignation of Maldini’s assistant, Leonardo, reflecting a broader reform of Italy’s technical staff. With the new coach’s return, Italy will open their UEFA Nations League campaign on 25 September against Belgium, before travelling to face Turkey.

Mancini’s past tenure (2018‑2023) saw a record 37‑game unbeaten run and a Euro 2020 victory, but he had previously failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and resigned in August 2023. The return comes amid ongoing debates about governance, professionalism, and the impact of external commercial ties on national football.

Mancini’s reappointment is seen by some as a return to stability after a turbulent period marked by rapid changes in leadership and disappointing results. The 2023‑24 season will test whether the experienced Italian can consolidate the squad and prepare Italy for upcoming competitions.
