Syria officially condemned an Israeli military strike on the village of Beit Jinn, located southwest of the nation's capital Damascus. The attack reportedly hit a civilian vehicle, leaving several people injured.
The strike represents the second Israeli operation against Syrian targets in a span of seven days. Syrian officials labeled it an “unlawful breach of its sovereignty” and an affront to international law.
Israel’s army said the aerial strike was aimed at a purported “terrorist” preparing an imminent attack, describing the target as being in the “final stages of preparation.”
Earlier this week, Israel struck a Syrian military airbase near the Turkish frontier in a move that Russia and other regional actors have warned could inflame existing tensions.
The United States reacted with caution, describing the attack as an “unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability.” Representative Tom Barrack, U.S. ambassador to Turkey, suggested Israel might be seeking to draw Turkey into a broader conflict ahead of its political cycle, remarks which faced swift rebuttal from Israeli defence minister Israel Katz.
Katz denounced the U.S. comments as “full of inaccuracies,” asserting Israeli forces were “acting on clear intelligence about Turkey’s intentions.” He further claimed that Israel’s moves were predicated on a status‑quo agreement between Israel and Syria that Syria was close to violating, notably by allowing Turkish troops near an airbase close to Aleppo.
The incident occurs against a backdrop of strained relations among Israel, Syria, and regional allies, with Turkey’s military support for Syrian opposition forces and Israel’s repeated suspicion of neighboring states influencing the conflict. Analysts caution that continued confrontations may accelerate geopolitical shifts in the Middle East, impacting diplomacy and security dynamics across the region.
