Student killed in Catholic school shooting in Southern Philippines
A 16‑year‑old student was shot dead inside a Catholic junior high school in Zamboanga City, Philippines. The alleged shooter, a fellow student, later killed himself in a separate classroom.
According to Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso, the suspect slipped a .45‑calibre pistol into a classroom before firing first at a teacher seated at a table—missing—and then moving to another room where he shot a student who died at the scene.
Alleged livestream footage circulated by local media shows a first‑person view of a gun barrel advancing down a hallway. Police reported the situation was brought under control with no further active threats.
The incident occurs two months after a high‑school shooting in Tacloban City that left three students dead and 20 others wounded. In that case, two teenage boys were shooters, one of whom had regularly played the violent online game “Gorebox,” which the Philippine Senate has barred and is investigating for its impact on youth.
Across Southeast Asia, authorities are reviewing restrictions on minors’ social media use, citing possible adverse effects. Earlier this month, a Thai teenager killed eight classmates and committed suicide after reportedly consuming violent content on social media.
