Background
The 21‑year‑old pop‑rap singer known as D4vd (real name David Anthony Burke) has been charged with murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 and unlawful mutilation of human remains. The charges stem from the case of 14‑year‑old Celeste Rivas Hernandez, whose death was discovered in a Tesla that was registered to Burke’s address last September.
Preliminary Hearing
On Monday prosecutors presented evidence that included graphic photographs of the dismembered body, text messages where the victim alleged the defendants’ intent to harm her, and inventory records of chainsaw and other tools ordered by Burke after the alleged murder. A homicide detective testified that the defendant had purchased a body bag and a shovel online within days of the disappearance. Judge Charlaine Olmedo ruled that the evidence presented during the preliminary hearing satisfied the threshold for probable cause. She noted that the prosecution had established special circumstances such as “lying in wait”, a motive for financial gain and an attempt to eliminate a witness. Burke is scheduled to be charged on 31 August, after which the trial is expected to begin within 90 days.
