Dramatic Collapse Leaves Students in Peril
A five‑storey residential building in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of Delhi collapsed on Sunday afternoon. Eyewitnesses say about 50 people, largely students, were inside when the building fell.
Local police report one death and two critical injuries. Six people have been rescued so far. Rescue teams operate under difficult conditions, working to clear rubble and reach those trapped underneath.
The collapsed structure was subject to construction work in its basement. The owner, holding a 100‑year lease, had undertaken excavation aimed at expanding the property. While the upper sections were reinforced, the foundations were reportedly weakened, contributing to the collapse.
Delhi’s Chief Minister reassured residents that adjacent buildings were evacuated on safety grounds and that rescue efforts would continue until everyone is safe. A legislative assembly member reported that some trapped students were placing calls from beneath rubble.
Student activists and the National Students’ Union of India have called for a full investigation and accountability for any parties found negligent. Police are searching for the building owner as part of the inquiry.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns over building safety regulations and oversight in rapidly urbanising regions of India. Emergency services and the government are expected to release further updates as the operation proceeds.
