Heatwaves Linked to 301 Drowning Incidents in France

Since 19 June, France has recorded 301 drownings, a 14 % rise over 2025, with Sports and Youth Minister Marina Ferrari saying the surge is connected to extreme heat.

Ferrari told France Inter that many deaths occurred in places without proper supervision, including canals and private pools. She cautioned that sudden immersion in cold water during hot days can cause shock and that some incidents involved people exceeding their physical limits.

The minister also noted a significant number of drowning cases involved older adults, many in personal pools. She urged regional authorities to improve swimming areas and enhance safety measures.

Heatwaves across Europe have triggered large wildfires and increased temperatures, especially in the Mediterranean. Climate experts say the continent is warming twice as fast as the global average, highlighting the link between climate change and rising risk.

Authorities and experts emphasize public education on safe water practices and infrastructure upgrades as vital steps to reduce the toll of heat‑induced drownings.
