US authorities began a search for six people on a medical plane that disappeared early Saturday morning above the Atlantic near Nantucket, Massachusetts.

The Federal Aviation Administration lost contact with a Gulfstream G‑100 belonging to Latitude Air Ambulances after it departed from Bermuda on a flight to Boston’s Logan International Airport. The aircraft, registered for medical transport, was scheduled to land in Boston at 1:30 p.m. local time.

According to flight data, the jet fell sharply from about 24,000 feet to 11,000 feet before its radio went silent. The Coast Guard’s Northeast District has launched an air and water search in the designated area off Nantucket.

Officials are working with satellite and radar to locate the missing aircraft, while families of the six aboard await any news. The search continues as authorities investigate the cause of the disappearance.
