Bus Crash on Egypt’s Red Sea Coast Claims 16 Lives
At least 16 people died in a bus accident that struck a rural road between the Red Sea towns of Dahab and Nuweiba on Wednesday morning, Egypt’s health ministry confirmed. Another 28 people were reported injured, with many of them treated on site by up to 20 ambulances dispatched to the scene.
The exact cause of the crash is still unknown, but authorities suspect factors such as driver error or road conditions. The stretch of road is a popular route for tourists, attracting visitors from around the globe to the glowing beaches and coral reefs of South Sinai.
Road‑traffic fatalities remain a persistent concern in Egypt: the government recorded almost 6,000 deaths linked to road accidents in 2025 alone. “Roughly a third of those fatalities are blamed on reckless driving; the other half stems from inadequate road maintenance and vehicle safety standards,” senior officials have said.
A month earlier, a separate crash in the northeastern Ismailia governorate killed 18 people and injured 30 when two lorries collided, illustrating a pattern of transportation mishaps across the country.
The incident has prompted calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better emergency response infrastructure, especially in tourist hotspots that see millions of visitors each year.
