Explosive–laden Drone Discovered at German Airport Sparks Security Alert
A drone carrying an explosive device was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport on the night of 4 August, prompting Saxony police to deploy a specialised robot to remove the detonator and conduct a controlled explosion.
The incident was spotted by an airport employee near parked Ukrainian cargo planes and involved a second unidentified object that collided with a cargo aircraft in the same area, later landing in Hannover with only minor damage.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the situation as a “new level of threat” and warned against a prompt, professional, hybrid attack that may involve state actors.
Leipzig/Halle Airport serves both German military and NATO logistics, as well as Ukrainian flights operated by Antonov Airlines, and is a major DHL hub, making it a strategic target for future threats.
The drone incident follows several unauthorized flights over military bases and key infrastructure across Europe since the full‑scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, raising suspicions of Russian involvement, though Moscow has denied any role.
After the detonator was removed, authorities carried out a controlled explosion. Flights on the northern runway resumed at 01:55 local time, while the southern runway remains closed.
The incident comes amid a broader context of server‑based interception, parcel fires, and espionage at the same airport, including a July 2024 parcel fire and a Chinese‑linked espionage case last year.
In the wake of these events, German airports remain on high alert, with authorities emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and rapid response to potential drone threats.
